The Elizabethan Gardens, built in 1960 in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony," is home to one of the world's most exquisite collections of flowers and plants. In addition to its wide variety of annuals and perennials, this garden memorial is mainly known for its beautiful rose collection which includes The Queen Elizabeth Rose donated to the garden by Queen Elizabeth II. The garden also contains a statuary which houses a stone representation of Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents and prominent figure in American myth and folklore. The Elizabethan Gardens are contained within the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on the northernmost tip of Roanoke Island.
