Established in 1941, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the history of Sir Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony," the very first attempt of a colonial settlement on American soil. This settlement mysteriously failed in the late 1500s after ships stopped arriving on time from Britain with crucial supplies. Contained within the site lie the reconstructed five-sided fort, museum, interpretive programs and the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens, a period garden and memorial to America's original English colonists. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site lies three miles north of Manteo, on Roanoke Island.
